Wild Card Time
A sweep would have left the Sox just three and a half games out of first, but it was not to be, as the Yankees took two out of three at Fenway. Not only did they push the Sox back a game, but they also cleared enough elbow room to lay claim, unofficially, to the division title.Once again, it's wild card time.
The good news: the Red Sox have won the wild card a record six times since it was first introduced in 1995.
The bad news: the Texas Rangers are one game behind the Sox and Tampa Bay is just three back, with six more to play against the Boston.
Another year, another uphill battle. Makes watching the remaining games all the more interesting.
Next up: The Chicago White Sox at Fenway tonight. Jose Contreras (5-11. 5.13) vs. Clay Buchholz (2-3, 3.99)

At least this year y'all have a challenge... will there ever be a day where the Yanks or Sox both miss the playoffs or am I just dreaming? Hehe. I kid... sorta.

I'm so drained from our series that I get a knot in my stomach just thinking about our teams meeting in the playoffs. I want it and I dread it at the same time!

I have complete faith in the Red Sox to win the Wild Card this year. We did last year, and we made it to the 7th game of the ALCS.
I agree with Jane, I can't wait to see the Yankees and Sox play in the play-offs.

There's still 39 games left this season. I know I'm even pretty close to 'settling' for the Wild Card, but I'm not packing it in just yet. This is a new generation of Red Sox, this isn't the Red Sox of the entire last century that thrived on letting us down. Stay calm and wait til then end.

Jeff, don't be ridiculous. A year without the Sox and the Yankees? That would be nearly impossible.
Jane, that's beauty of the rivalry!
Melissa, you're right. This team still has plenty of fight in it. If they can split the two series with the Rays, they'll lock up the wild card.
Josh, you are a true fan. The realist in me knows better, but yeah, I'd be fine if the Yankees collapsed at the finish line. I must warn you, though, it is so very unlikely. That team is solid.

This upcoming series against the Rays is going to be huge! September is going to be a crazy, crazy month.
