Theo Working A Deadline Supertrade™ for Martinez

Theo Saves All of HIs Rollover Minutes for TodayToday is one of my favorite days in baseball. Yes, more than stupid "Truck Day" or the  semi-interesting "Draft Day," the July 31 Trade Deadline is the best non-game event in baseball. It all comes down to 4 p.m. and many GMs go right to the wire waiting for the other team to blink before pulling the trigger on the best deal possible.

Theo Epstein has become the master of the multi-team trade. Rarely is there a simple two-team swap for Boston. There are always some moving parts involving other teams, and if he expects to land Cleveland slugger/catcher/first baseman/DH Victor Martinez, expect at least one other team to enter the mix.

We all know Clay Buchholz will be the centerpiece of the trade, but what of the newly-acquired Adam LaRoche? He'll need to find a home or the logjam at first base will exceed the 25-man roster. Picking up a guy like Martinez will add a powerful bat and will solve the problem of the eventual departure/retirement of Jason Varitek.

I'm only somewhat hopeful for a Roy Halladay deal, but until Ricciardi relents from his ridiculous demands, it will be an uphill battle.

Unless of course, Theo concocts the first-ever 30-team Supertrade™ sending Sox prospects to teams across the country, and--of course--to Canada, too.

Come on, 4:00!

Steve I was reading today that the Rangers are talking to the Jays about Halladay. Martinez would be a great addition to the team; I guess we'll know if a few hours.

Julia, I'm sure EVERY team with prospects and rookies will be calling J.P. about Halladay. They've got nothing to lose and if Roy pressures the Jays front office enough, they just may drop their asking price, if only slightly.

Surprise surprise you still have Clay! Victor should help you guys, it's too bad he had to go. He is a very emotional leader and he showed his passion for baseball & the Tribe before he left. http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090731&content_id=6171070&vkey=news_cle&fext=.jsp&c_id=cle

I agree that the trade deadline is one of the most fun days in the baseball year.
And now that it's over, I think the Sox came out big. Not having to get rid of Buchholz was a big move for Theo.
It will certainly pan out. I just hope the Sox bullpen can get back to pitching well.
