Theo Trading for Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee?
Well, here's a trade rumor that could make a serious impact on the AL East race: The latest buzz is that Theo Epstein is trying to work out a deal with Cleveland to get both catcher Victor Martinez and starting pitcher Cliff Lee. No word on the cost for these players, but the usual suspects (Buchholz, Bowden, Anderson) are surely in the mix.I wonder what adding Martinez would do to Jason Varitek's playing time. Clearly Martinez is the better offensive option and he's not too shabby behind the plate. Varitek has a player option for next season, but the Sox haven't had much faith in their captain at the plate since 2007.
So with Mike Lowell occasionally sitting in favor of Adam LaRoche and the possibility of Varitek benched for Martinez, will this normally tranquil clubhouse start grousing about playing time? Sure, I'm getting ahead of myself here, but all these things are considerations in any trade scenario.
I'd vote in favor of a trade for the two. Cliff Lee's 7-9 record is more a product of poor run support than anything else. His ERA is a very respectable 3.14 and let's not forget he's just one season removed from winning the Cy Young Award.
If the Indians do this they're pretty much saying they're not interested in winning next year or the year after either (in my opinion). If it happens, wow, the Red Sox have to be the main squeeze in the East.

Um, I realllyy hope the deal doesn't happen. You have to realize, Victor WANTS to stay with Cleveland. He has said, " I dont even want to think about being traded." Give him a break, if he wants to stay, Mark Shapiro better flippin let him stay!! http://tribechick.mlblogs.com/

I appreciate the loyalty you're showing for your team. It's really a shame that the Indians appear to be sellers after so many predicted them to win the AL Central this year. Seems like now other teams have jumped in and are asking about Cliff Lee, but only the Sox want Martinez and Lee. Remember, it's just a rumor. Who knows how it will all shake out?

Boston will have to give up a lot, Obviously. their was a similar report about the Dodgers wanting both Lee and Martinez.
Those reports were shot down by both teams, Like normal.

Cleveland had so much potential coming into the season and just didn't produce. If this deal happens I think Boston becomes the easy favorite to win the WS.
