Ortiz the Latest Cheater Exposed

Ortiz was a lot more fun when he was on the juice. Is anyone even remotely surprised by the news of David Ortiz's name appearing on the list of the 104 players who tested positive for PEDs in 2003?

Once A-Rod's name showed up I immediately thought of Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz (and yes, Albert Pujols, too.) The best power hitters in the game all seemed to be juicing.

Jose Canseco was right.

What's bugging me is this list was supposed to be confidential, but the players association didn't see to it to have the information destroyed. Now, one by one, the names are coming out.

Once and for all, the media should publish the official list in full. The anonymity is gone. The list is in the hands of too many people. In fact, you don't have to look very hard to see what may be the actual list floating casually around the Internet. I won't publish it here, because it's unconfirmed.

So do I think the 2004 and 2007 World Series were tainted? No, I don't. With over 100 names on the list, it's clear that steroids and PEDs were a problem on all teams. The Steroid Era is full of liars and cheats and now Ortiz can take his rightful place among them in shame.

The good news for all these cheaters is that now that there are so many of them, the National Baseball Hall of Fame will have no choice but to reluctantly let them in at some point down the road, whether they like it or not.

Steve, if the news is true I am truly heartbroken. I just saw Ortiz on TV. He looks hurt, in shock and heartbroken and says he does not know what it is that he tested positive for. He promised he would meet with the media again when he gets all the details and THAT I do believe.

It should not come as a surprise, yet it still does. Cheats are everywhere in the game, and to have another high profile star exposed just hurts the game's credibility. Right now, I have no trouble ripping into Ortiz. If I am wrong, I will apologise along with everyone else later. Ashhttp://ashleymarshall.mlblogs.com

I just hope he dopesn;t start with the ridiculous stories similar to the ones A-Rod made up. Just come clean and end it.

Julia, the news is true. Ortiz is just working on his story. Ashley, for all we know the whole league cheated. Doesn't make them any less than what they are: liars and cheaters. I still appreciate Ortiz and I think he's a good guy. But he cheated and that is sad and disappointing.

how can you not taint the 2004 and 2007 World Series victories...far and away your best players - Ortiz and Manny - were juiced up monsters. the Sox NEVER would have won without them - just because 100 people were cheating does not make it right - that 2004 team did something the city of Boston claims as Magical...it wasnt magical it was worse then WWE events...its a fraud, its fake and its definitely tainted...if i was a Sox fan i'd be throwing my B hat into the Charles River. You expect these things from the Yankees...but this...this is like finding out Christmas is a sham

I suppose you could put an asterisk next to every WS winner from 1995 to last year, but the whole league was tainted, so all those championships the Yankees won are legit, as are the two won by the Sox and all the other ones as well. 104 names on the list--no matter which team you support, you can expect your favorite player to show up on it.

"..the whole league was tainted, so all those championships the Yankees won are legit, as are the two won by the Sox .."

By broadbrushing the entire league as cheaters you're trying to justify 2004 as not tainted. I don't think EVERY SINGLE PLAYER in the mlb is or was juiced - not even a majority of the league; you're saying this in sheer denial, because you don't want to believe that 2004 could have been anything other than the happy Disneyland memory that you're used to.

So, what should we do? Say no one won the World Series for the past 15 years? Or should we just remove 2004 from the books because the worst loss in playoff history is tied to your team? It's way too late for all that. But if you're here just to gloat, that's fine with me. Enjoy your moment of Schadenfreude. Lord knows you've waited a long time for this.

By the way, did I say "every single player" was juiced? No. Only the elite power hitters--and that is slowly proving itself to be true. Agreed?

Steve, i was criticizing your claim that "the whole league was tainted" and was not having a schadenfreude-fest over the Ortiz issue.

"By the way, did I say "every single player" was juiced? No."
Yes, you did imply that - "..the whole league was tainted.." you wrote in your comment above.

When I said the whole league was tainted I meant there were likely to be players from every team involved, but not every player on every team. Hope that clarifies things.

The most audacious thing to me is that "Manram" just keeps saying "Nothing changes. We'll just keep hitting". Like that's the issue cheater. You have no integrity and by pretending it (your cheating) doesn't mean anything you are saying you would have had the same stats if you weren't juiced. So Mensa, if that's the case, why did you juice? I'm sorry but I grew up in an era where the worst thing someone could call you if you played sports was a cheater and I stand by that. Erase whatever stats these morons accumulated during those years we know they were on PEDs and make them pay back their salaries.

It's not a question of the whole league being tainted. Obviously that is not the case. What taints the sport for me, and why I don't watch MLB anymore, is that you suspect anyone who excels at it. I know that is not fair to those who are clean but it's hard to keep that thought out of your mind.

From Tom Verducci on SI.com:

"Does this mean the Red Sox's world championships are tainted? No more than the titles of the Yankees, Marlins, Diamondbacks, Angels and every other team from the most distrustful era in the history of the game. There was no such thing as a "clean team." There were only teams in which the dirty had yet to be uncovered."

Depends steve_t. If one of the lesser players on a team who does not impact the outcome of games is juiced it is different than say, the 2 best players on a team being juiced and affecting the outcome of games. I say baseball should, for once, show courage and publish the list so we know who and on what teams. And while they are at it, get serious, real serious like I.A.A.F. You get caught cheating/doping, once, you're out of the sport for a minimum of 3 years. I'm guessing Big Popeye his fellow dope head would think twice before juicing if it crimped their salaries, as it should. Lastly steve, I don't care a whit about baseball any more. I grew up on Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal in the 60s when I lived in the Bay Area. I followed the Giants until Barry Big Head ruined the team. He's still in denial.

So now that he has come out and proclaimed his love for,...ehmm "Vitamins", I wonder if you still finally come out and give A-Rod credit for at least accepting he used steriods?

I dont have anything against Ortiz, but I think hypocrisy by the fans is one of the reasons the A-Rod witch hunt earlier this year was sickening and as a Yankee fan, I am still waiting for a Bosox fan to show some cahones, and come out and agree that A-Rod was the target of a vile, malicious witch hunt, engineered by the media, and with no other goal other than to use the popularity of the Yankees as a trampoline to sell junk magazins and shallow books.

IMO, Ortiz & Manny has had his it way too easy.....

Oh and by the way, how about we get that famous list outta the way once and for all so we can stop helping a few make a quick buck at everyone else's expense?
