Rays Embarrass Red Sox, 13-0

Matt Garza may be ugly, but he can beat the Red Sox in his sleep.
What a mess! Josh Beckett pitched like it was 2006 again and Matt Garza completely dominated Boston's lineup in one of the most lopsided, ridiculous games I've ever seen.

Garza was perfect through six innings. The next inning Jacoby Ellsbury scratched out a weak infield hit, and that was all the offense the Red Sox could muster against Garza and reliever Grant Balfour.

It was clear Terry Francona had given up on this game (and rightfully so) when he swapped reliever Javier Lopez with Wednesday night's hero, outfielder Jonathan Van Every. The result? After Lopez coughed up five earned runs and retired just one batter in the eighth, Van Every stopped the bleeding and kept the Rays off the board after giving up just a hit and a walk. Pretty impressive for an outfielder who hadn't pitched in ten years.

Meanwhile, start the clock on Javier Lopez's eventual trade or designation for assignment. He stinks and will continue to be awful.

Three more games at Tropicana Field. I have a bad feeling about this.

Tonight, Justin Masterson (2-0, 2.70) faces Andy Sonnanstine (0-3, 7.78). I like the Sox tonight, but somehow I think the game will be closer than the starters' records indicate.

I caught the end of the game. When I saw Van Every pitching, I said, "They're doing a Nick Swisher!" It brought back bad memories of the Yankees at the Trop. Ooh, those cowbells.

Steve,
To me, it seems like every time Terry Francona has given up on a game every time he puts Javier Lopez in. Except when we have a substantial lead of ten runs or more. Jonathan Van Every wasn't half bad though... 0.00 ERA!

And I had to miss Van Every pitching because I was chaperoning a field trip to NY!!
