Masterson Makes His Case
Justin Masterson made his big league debut yesterday and even though they lost, the Red Sox learned that they now have another option to step into the rotation if needed.Filling in a hole created by the flu bug that has severely affected the team, Masterson looked very sharp over his six innings, allowing just two hits and one run. He received a tough luck no decision when the bullpen imploded and the Sox lost 7-5 at Fenway.
Does Masterson deserve another shot in the rotation or should he take his confidence-building debut back to Double-A and continue to mow down hitters while building up his skills?

I think he gets another shot. You can always send clay or lester back to the minors.

Nah, send him down and wait until late summer, the way they called up Pedroia in 06 and Ellsbury in 07. Teams in great shape with Colon in the wings as a #5.

I'd sooner have Masterson than Colon, who has lost a lot off his fastball and seems a reach as a reclamation project. The downside--as the Yankees have shown--is having lots of youth in the rotation at once. I'll say this, the Red Sox organization is loaded with young talent.

I agree with Ed. Colon was hitting 93-94 on the gun. When he's ready, assuming he can still control the strike zone, he'll be fine. If not, it's Lester for the long haul.
