Sox Grab Colón for Insurance
After coming thisclose to signing a major league deal with the Chicago White Sox, Bartolo Colón signed a minor league deal with Boston in an attempt to grab the #5 spot in the rotation.
The Red Sox have little to lose and plenty to gain in this deal. If Colón is good enough to secure that fifth spot, then rookie Clay Buchholz can limit his innings and gradually make his way into the rotation, which I assume was the plan when they signed Schilling this off-season.
Colón was a train wreck last year, going 6-8 with a sky-high 6.34 ERA due to shoulder problems. I'd be shocked if he returned to his Cy Young form from just three years ago--in fact, I'm sure he won't--but there's an outside chance he could hold down the back end of the rotation until Buchholz is ready for full-time duty.

I have very little confidence that Colon will be effective, however it was a good move, insurance if nothing else. I have heard via Keith Law, that his medical records are a "disaster." But again it is a very low risk move, and just adds to the depth.

Well, let's see: he's overweight and has had back, shoulder and elbow problems over the past two seasons. Yeah, I'd agree with Keith.

Why?? Why?? We do not need old fart pitchers. Schilling is 40.. end his career!!Don't worry, He will survive in Politics. What is the next best thing, Red Sox get someone who came from shoulder cuff surgery and is over 34 years old. That is insane!!As a Red Sox's fan, do we need older guys on the team. We have Wakefield, Mirabelli, Lowell because he can field and hit. Manny lazy .... gets 80 million to do what ever he pleases and he wants more money. I wish all employees in America learn from athletes and go to your employeror boss and ask for 1 million dollars for 1 year and work 6 months out of the year. the employer will show you to the door or offer you the 40,000 job with benefits. US AMERICAN WORKERS AND UNEMPLOYED WORKERS ARE QUESTIONING WHY IS IT ONE PERSON GETS 80 MILLION IN GOD SO MANY YEARS BUT EMPLOYEES CAN NOT..SOME RUN THIS COUNTRY AND OUR BELOVED SOLDIERS THAT PROTECT OUR COUNTRY SO THAT PEOPLE LIKE MANNY CAN MAKE 80 OR 150 MILLION DOLLARS. SOLDIERS IN IRAQ ARE IN IT FOR 4 YEARS. A SOLDIER SHOULD HAVE A CONTRACT FOR 10 MILLION DOLLARS FOR RISKING THEIR NECK. MANNY DOES NOT RISK HIS BODY WHEN A BALL IS HIT NEAR HIM. ITS A BOLD STATEMENT BUT TRUE. NOBODY IS WORTH 150 MILLION DOLLARS. I DO NOT CARE WHO YOU ARE. YOU SHOULD BE WORTH THE SAME AMOUNT AS A LAWYER OR A DOCTOR THAT PUTS IN MORE WORK THAN ANY BASEBALL FOOTBALL OR HOCKEY PLAYER. Have we not learn when Roger Clemens who returned to the Yankees. He ****** big time. HE WAS OVER 40 What happen to younger pitchers that can throw 98-100 mph with no injuries nor surgery? Somebody in the Red Sox's Organization is not doing their job when it comes to scouting. "No do not get the Dominican Republic or the young Cuban..no no get the the older guy in his mid 30's that has past injuries and can survive 4 innings and throw 89-90 mph so that we can use up our bullpen like Curt Schilling did in the World Series. I swear sports in New England care for the older players...this trend has got to stop. Vinny T back up quarterback..Sorry we do not need old farts playing for the redsox.
