Newsflash! Bartolo Colón is Fat!

He Ain't Heavy, He's Bartolo.

That's right. It seems the oft-injured righty is overweight. Everyone's reporting it. You can read about it here, here, here, here and here. Just one question: when was this guy ever mistaken for a Domincan Ron Guidry? Sure, Bartolo's fat. But that's not news, folks.
Colón was a fat rookie who became a fat ace who became a fat injured has-been with a shot at redemption. But even if he overcomes adversity and reclaims his status as the devastating power pitcher who won a Cy in '05, he'll still be fat.

In other baseball revelations, Tom Verducci is snarkily reporting that apart from Mr. Colón, almost every other player in baseball is claiming to be "in the best shape of my life."

The Natural?

Coco hears Antelope's Feet everywhere he goes.

It's assumed he's displaced Coco Crisp from the starting center fielder's position and many are already heralding him as a sure-fire Rookie of the Year candidate. Now Men's Vogue (who knew?) has deemed Jacoby Ellsbury "clearly the Natural." But after reading this article, Sox fans just might prefer to latch onto the Navajo take on his middle name: Antelope's Feet.

You can read it here. Thanks to reader Barrett Baffert (of mensvogue.com) for sending this along.

Sox Grab Colón for Insurance

After coming thisclose to signing a major league deal with the Chicago White Sox, Bartolo Colón signed a minor league deal with Boston in an attempt to grab the #5 spot in the rotation.

The Red Sox have little to lose and plenty to gain in this deal. If
Colón is good enough to secure that fifth spot, then rookie Clay Buchholz can limit his innings and gradually make his way into the rotation, which I assume was the plan when they signed Schilling this off-season.

Colón was a train wreck last year, going 6-8 with a sky-high 6.34 ERA due to shoulder problems. I'd be shocked if he returned to his Cy Young form from just three years ago--in fact, I'm sure he won't--but there's an outside chance he could hold down the back end of the rotation until Buchholz is ready for full-time duty.
